It is no longer a long goodbye for the fans of The Twilight Sad.
After not releasing new music in almost seven years, The Twilight Sad announced on Instagram on Wednesday that they are releasing their sixth studio album, IT'S THE LONG GOODBYE, this March. This is their first project with new music since 2019, when they released IT WON/T BE LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME.
The Scottish rock duo that consists of James Graham and Andy MacFarlane has not been MIA for the past few years, though. In addition to opening for The Cure throughout 2023 and 2024, the band released the demo versions of all the tracks in their 2014 hit album Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants to Leave in honor of its 10th anniversary, as well as a live album for IT WON/T BE LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME in 2020.
Last Halloween, they announced a Spring 2026 tour around Europe and the United Kingdom, which will start in Milan on April 12 and end in Dublin's Button Factory in May. They will also continue to open for The Cure this June and July.

"It’s been a long time coming, but we are excited to bring in the new year with news many of you have been waiting for," the band wrote in their caption. They also shared that in honor of the release, they will be playing in-store shows around the United Kingdom, as well as releasing special merch and having signed giveaways.

The Twilight Sad also revealed that the second single for the new album, "DESIGNED TO LOSE," is also out on all streaming platforms. The lead single, titled "WAITING FOR THE PHONE CALL," was released this past October and features Robert Smith of The Cure on guitar.

The new album will have 10 tracks and features David Jeans on drums and Alex Mackay on bass. MacFarlane produced the album, which was recorded at Willesden’s Battery Studios in London. In addition, Andy Savours from My Bloody Valentine contributed additional production, while Chris Coady mixed the album.
According to a press release shared with Under the Radar Mag, IT'S THE LONG GOODBYE is the band's most personal album yet, especially for Graham, whose mother died in January 2024 after being diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.
"The record is heavily influenced by my mental health, grief and loss, and the need to be strong in positions where you’re not feeling it. It’s a very human story, I think this is just my version of it. I feel that everybody goes through something like this. Everybody loses somebody. Everybody questionslife," Graham said in the press release. "I want to be a relatable person that talks about things that can happen and give an opportunity for people to go, 'Well, you’re not alone.' I want people to be able to listen to this record and hear that it comes from a place of raw emotion. The album is an opportunity to share my experience and move forward with my life."
IT'S THE LONG GOODBYE will be out on March 27 via Rock Action Records. The album is now available to pre-order on vinyl and CD, as well as their merch bundles on their official website.
