It might feel like everyone is chronically online, but these six celebrities have quit social media for good.

Stars like Scarlett Johansson and Jim Carrey used to have accounts on social media platforms including Instagram, X and Facebook until they deleted their accounts and never looked back. Many celebrities, including Selena Gomez, have said that social media had a negative impact on their mental health.

The Rare Beauty founder spoke to Women's Wear Daily in October 2021 about why she took a brief hiatus from the online world, saying that she thought to herself, "'I don’t get anything from it. Nothing is giving me life.' "

"I just snapped, and I was over it," Gomez said.

Though she's since returned to social media, other stars have left for good — and expressed having no intentions of going back.

"I just got rid of it and I won't go back," Elizabeth Olsen told Glamourin an April 2021 interview.

Below, here are six celebrities who left social media for good.

Pride & Prejudice star Keira Knightley is among the stars who have left social media.

During a 2014 appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, the actress said she gave X a try once, but quickly deleted her profile once she started getting "creeped out" by all the strangers online.

"I did actually join Twitter for about 12 hours 'cause I try to be down with the kids and it just creeped me out," she said.

“I didn’t post anything and I was under a false name and I think because Chloë [Grace Moretz] followed me, suddenly all these people started following me and posting, ‘I’m having a cup of tea now,’ and I just got completely freaked out," she added.

Johansson is not on social media — and she says it's because she is "too fragile."

During an April 2023 interview on The Skinny Confidential Him & Her podcast, she spoke about deleting her Instagram after a couple of days because she is "too fragile of a person to have social media."

The Black Widow star added, "My ego is too fragile. I can't deal with it. My brain is too fragile, I'm like a delicate flower. I have enough anxiety."

Johansson said she also didn't like how much time she was spending looking at other people's profiles.

"When I started realizing that I'd spent 20 minutes looking at somebody's Instagram page who worked for a friend of mine — I now know you have a pit bull, two daughters, and live in Burbank — I was like, I just wasted 17 minutes of time," she said. "I now feel like I should move to California, get this specific dog and change my life in all these ways."

"I'm never going back to social media," theactress told Glamour.

Olsen told the outlet that the sites made her "uncomfortable" and she didn't like the way it "organized my brain."

"Like, if something happened in the world, I would say, 'Oh, do I have to post about this?' " she said. "I think it's very dangerous to think, 'Oh, something just happened in the world. I am an entitled person, whose voice must be heard on this issue.' "

Olsen added, "I do think it's important for people, who want to be voices and have platforms and who care deeply about issues to do that. I am terrified of that kind of pressure."

"If you have anxiety, it's tough to be hit with constant stuff, so it's tough to take a break from it, but when you do, you just kind of realize like this is real life, the phone is not," he said. "I think the phone makes things seem like everything's a lot worse than it actually is."

The comedian said his life has "drastically" changed since he put down his phone.

When asked if he would ever return to social media, he replied, "No way."
