Amy Winehouse’s mom, Janis, reflects on her daughter’s struggles with addiction and the pressures of fame in a new interview

Amy Winehouse’s mom is looking back on her late daughter’s life and career on the 15th anniversary of the “Back to Black” singer’s death.
The Grammy-winning artist died at age 27 from accidental alcohol poisoning on July 23, 2011. Her mom, Janis Winehouse, spoke candidly about her daughter’s struggles and how she’s processing grief these days in a new interview with The i Paper.
“She was a victim of her own success,” said Janis, 72, of Amy. “She didn’t want it, but it just followed her. And she’d be like, ‘Who, me?’”

Amy was “actually nervous,” explained Janis. “She didn’t have confidence. Hence the alcohol. I think it’s the same with many, many addicts with alcohol. The alcohol takes away the pain. And that is a horrible thing with addiction.”
As for how Janis deals with grief today, she told the outlet, “I’m just getting on with it because that’s what I do. I get on with life. I live it.”

Shortly after the “Rehab” artist’s death, Janis co-founded the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which works “to inspire children and young people to build their self-esteem and resilience,” according to its website. The organization also runs a recovery house for women called Amy’s Place in London’s Hackney neighborhood.
Jane Winehouse, Amy’s stepmother and wife of her father Mitch, told The i Paper that the late star “would love the women” at Amy’s Place.
“It’s very true to her,” said Jane, the Amy Winehouse Foundation’s co-founder and director. “Everyone here is so real. To be here, to engage properly in recovery, you have to get real. You quickly connect to people on quite a visceral level that you don’t necessarily connect with people in everyday life.”
During Amy’s career, she released two albums: Frank and Back to Black. She’s won a total of six Grammys: Best New Artist; Best Pop Vocal Album for Back to Black; Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Rehab”; plus a posthumous Best Pop Duo/Group Performance win for “Body and Soul” with Tony Bennett.
