- *Blue Bloods* spinoff *Boston Blue* wrapped its first season on Friday, May 22.

- The series ends on a cliffhanger that could put one supporting player out of action.

- CBS has renewed the show for a second season.

*Blue Bloods* ran for 14 seasons on CBS. Its spinoff, *Boston Blue*, just wrapped its first — and a second is on the way. Danny Reagan's adventures in Beantown are just beginning.

That said, *Boston Blue'*s first season was jam-packed with white-knuckle action, political intrigue, and, of course, loads of family drama. As Donnie Wahlberg’s hot-headed detective carved out a place in the Boston Police Department — where his son, Sean (Mika Amonsen), also took a job as a patrol officer — his partnership with Det. Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) connected him to her family, a noted law enforcement dynasty not unlike his own back in New York City.

Lena's family includes her mother Mae (Gloria Reuben), the Boston District Attorney; grandpa Edwin (Ernie Hudson), a prominent minister; stepsister Sarah (Maggie Lawson), the BPD Superintendent of Detectives; and half-brother Jonah (Marcus Scribner), an officer partnered with Sean.

As Danny and Lena squared off against thieves, smugglers, and serial killers, *Boston Blue* also explored the tangled branches of the Silver family tree. It all culminated in the season 1 finale, "Patrol," which brings one Silver to death's door as it brings back two familiar faces from *Blue Bloods*.

Below, we're breaking down the finale's biggest revelations, that intense cliffhanger, and what it all means for season 2 with the help of *Boston Blue* showrunners Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier.

Who shot Lena?

There are several shocking moments in "Patrol," not the least of them being Lena taking a bullet while investigating a shady company smuggling contraband into the local prison.

The lead about the contraband came via Eric Harper (Joe Delfin), the criminal who shivved Lena's old friend Yancey (Kieron River) a few episodes back. After a bit of digging, they're tipped off to a commissary vendor called Dax that's been delivering sundries to the prison in unmarked cars. While plotting their next move, they try what they think will be a harmless door-knock at the Dax warehouse. And that's when a shot blasts through the door and knocks Lena to the ground.

The shooter turns out to be a former inmate at the prison named Wally Craig. Sean jumps on the back of Wally's van as he drives off and is thrown off — but not before one of his AirPods lands on the rear bumper. This allows the BPD to track the van and, eventually, Wally's whereabouts.

Wally is found and arrested, but Lena is hurt, having suffered a punctured lung and nerve damage.

Does Lena finally meet her birth father?

Earlier in the season, Lena confronted her mother about the identity of her birth father, Chris Williams (Erik King).

Mae previously told her Chris had a criminal past and that he never knew about Lena, but she held back the whole truth. While it's true that Chris was incarcerated, he turned his life around after a stint in the military. And when Lena tracks him down herself, she's shocked to discover he's the chief at a police station just outside of Boston. Furthermore, he has a daughter of his own, Kristina (Alisha Wainwright), meaning that Lena has a half-sister she didn't know about.

As if that weren't enough, it turns out Chris *did* want to know about Lena *and* wanted to be part of her life, but Mae wouldn't allow it. After spending the last few episodes arguing with Mae about her desire to meet Chris, Lena gears up to confront him in the finale.

The opportunity comes when Lena is in the hospital. As she recovers, she finally meets her biological father for the first time. "Did you think about me?" she asks. "Did you wonder who I was?"

He apologizes for not having been there for her. "I was wrong to leave, whatever the circumstance," he says. He wants to make it right. Lena says it's a start.

You can expect to see more of Chris (and Kristina) in season 2. "This isn't the end. That story's not over," Sonnier confirms. "What does it look like to get to know someone that you were supposed to know your whole life? What does it look like to introduce a new biological sister when you are so very close to your stepsister? How do those new triangles and relationship dynamics work?"

Margolis, meanwhile, teases darker elements to this story. "Be careful what you wish for because there could be other consequences you didn't anticipate," he says. "But it all comes back to leaning on your family to get you through these tough times."

Why didn’t Mae want Lena to meet her father?

Chris also has a sit-down with Mae in the finale. When Mae says their separation was the right decision, Chris says he's long wondered if it was "right for our daughter."

"Lena is not ours," Mae replies. "Biology does not make you a father. Love, guidance, presence — that’s what’s required.”

She acknowledges that she told Chris she didn't want him in Lena's life, but chokes up when she recalls "the look of relief" in his eyes. "That's what stayed with me," she says.

"Mae, I'm here now," he says.

Should Mae be nervous about election season?

Yes, and she knows it, too, portending that election season is "gonna get ugly."

Why? Because a young, cocky Assistant District Attorney, Thad Longfellow (Ward Horton) wants to oust her as the District Attorney — and is willing to throw mud in order to do it.

And there is mud to throw. For one, Mae is carrying on a secret affair with Judge Elijah Robinson (Harry J. Lennix). Though they've worked to ensure their personal and professional relationships don't cross, they know she'll be in hot water if they're exposed before they can get ahead of it.

Thad may even see potential in exploiting Mae's relationship with Chris. Near the end of the finale, Elijah receives a text with a photo of Mae and Chris at a restaurant. She's already being spied on.

When asked if campaigning will bring out a different (perhaps darker) side of Mae, Margolis says the "temptation" to throw mud is "going to be very real and very hard to resist." He adds, "She doesn't like getting pulled into the mud, but she has people around her who might be willing to [play dirty.]"

Sonnier notes that an unscrupulous power player like Thad becoming District Attorney could result in a seismic shift in terms of how the Boston PD does its job. The Silvers, too, might end up in his crosshairs if Mae isn't reelected. "She's quite literally not just protecting the throne, but she's protecting her kids," he says.

Is Danny planning a career pivot?

He sure is. In the finale, Sean asks his dad why he never considered following in his father's footsteps and becoming a police commissioner. Danny says he's a "boots on the ground" type, but his tune changes by episode's end.

First, there's what happened to Lena. He's nearly moved to tears while sitting by her side in the hospital. "You put a real scare into me, partner," he says. And then he gets a visit from Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), his ex-partner and girlfriend. Their relationship has been strained since he moved to Boston, but her desire to commit to him has him wanting more stability.

He plans on taking the sergeant's exam. "If I'm in a command position, I can be for Sean what my dad was for me," he says.

Sonnier laughs when discussing Danny's newfound interest in climbing the ranks. "What detective is more overdue for a promotion than Danny Reagan?" he asks.

He adds that this is exactly the kind of story they want to explore on *Boston Blue*. "What does it look like for Danny Reagan to be in charge of people? What does it look like for Danny Reagan to have to answer in a different way to the hierarchy?"

Danny also tells Maria that a promotion could help him get a bigger home so Maria, as well as her mother and daughter, can come live with him in Boston.

"Shouldn't we take things slow?" she asks.

"I think I'm done taking it slow with you," he says.

Danny and Maria's reunion, Margolis says, is representative of Danny "opening himself up to being happy again" after embracing his new life in this new city. Following the death of his wife, Linda (Amy Carlson), on *Blue Bloods,* Danny has been "stuck in one place" emotionally for a long time. That's finally beginning to change, though the process won't be without conflict.

Does anyone from *Blue Bloods *show up in the finale?

In addition to Maria, the *Boston Blue* finale sees the return of Joe Hill (Will Hochman), Danny's nephew and Sean's cousin. Throughout *Blue Bloods*, he found community with the Reagan clan. Here, he joins Danny, Sean, and the Silvers for dinner.

"Joe Hill represents such a great parallel to what Lena has gone through and is going through," Margolis says. "It really felt like a great opportunity to bridge the new relationships and the two shows, and also to push us forward into an understanding of Lena reconnecting with her father and her sister. It's a beginning, right?"

How does Boston Blue season 1 end?

*Boston Blue* ends with a family gathering with several special guests. There's Joe, of course, but also Chris and Kristina. When Kristina acknowledges that they're half-sisters, Lena replies, “We never looked at it as half or step, just one big, happy, kind of confusing family.”

There's one character missing, though: Det. Brian Rodgers (Ryan Broussard), Lena's boyfriend. Earlier in the finale, we learned that he's been offered a spot with the DEA, but this new job will require him to move to Washington, D.C. He told Lena prior to her being shot, but their conversation is interrupted before they can explore what the move means for their relationship.

Lena worries he's going to break up with her, but during the final moments, we see him buying flowers for her on his way to meet the Silvers for dinner. But he doesn't make it. When he climbs into his car, a truck intentionally rams into it, pushing the vehicle into the Charles River.

Margolis and Sonnier are understandably staying quiet about Brian's fate — and who was behind the wheel — but they did discuss what the attack means for the show going forward.

"Whether he's with us next year or not, it galvanizes family," Sonnier says. "Our show at its heart is a family drama. And what greater drama can you introduce when you think everything is at peace?"
