Cinderella's stepsisters are getting their own movie.

Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter reported on Tuesday, March 24, that Disney is developing a live-action movie that will follow Cinderella's stepsisters Anastasia and Drizella, directed by The Naked Gun's Akiva Schaffer. Screenwriters Dan Gregor and Doug Man, whom Schaffer worked with on last year's The Naked Gun reboot and Disney's 2022 movie Chip n' Dale: Rescue Rangers, will write the screenplay, based on an original script by Michael Montemayor, as those outlets reported.

Cinderella fans are most likely familiar with the characters, who, along with their mother, torment Cinderella until she attends a royal ball and meets a prince with the help of a fairy godmother, from Disney's 1950 animated classic.

Sophie McShera and Holliday Grainger portrayed Drisella and Anastasia, respectively, in Disney's 2015 live-action remake of Cinderella, which starred Lily James in the lead role, Cate Blanchett as Cinderella's stepmother and Richard Madden as the prince.

No casting announcements have been made regarding the stars of the movie.

Schaffer, 48, is perhaps best known for his work with Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone as The Lonely Island on Saturday Night Live and their comedies Hot Rod and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. Stepsisters will be his first movie as a director since The Naked Gun, which revived the 1980s and '90s spoof comedy series with Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson in lead roles.

Stepsisters is the latest in a long string of live-action Disney movies that reimagine its classic animated material for modern audiences. The studio recently cast Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim in lead roles for its live-action adaptation of 2010's Tangled, and Dwayne Johnson is bringing a live-action version of 2016's animated hit Moana to theaters July 10.

Disney's recent live-action adaptations of animated features also include last year's Lilo & Stitch and Snow White, as well as 2024's The Lion King spinoff Mufasa and 2023's The Little Mermaid with Halle Bailey in the title role. As THR reported, Disney also remains in development on a live-action film based on the Beauty and the Beast antagonist Gaston.

According to Deadline, Schaffer, Taccone and Samberg are currently producing a Netflix movie that will star Samberg alongside Jason Momoa titled Protecting Jared.
