Horse racing tips for Thursday July 23, 2026 – Sandown

The Thursday nap pick is trained by David O’Meara

There’s a 7f Listed race for two-year-old fillies at Sandown this afternoon, as well as a couple of 7f Group 3s for juveniles at Leopardstown in the evening. But with limited form to go on in those contests, I’m focusing on a couple of handicaps for the day’s tips.

3.30 Sandown – Class 4 Handicap (1m 2f)

This is an interesting contest. Tawajjah ran a huge race on his stable debut and return from a long absence at Newmarket recently, finishing second in a 1m Class 3 handicap, well clear of the third.

Now down in grade, if he runs to that sort of level again he will go well – and he could be a horse to follow. However, this comes only two weeks on from what looked a hard enough race, and he travelled strongly that day, not shaping like one who’s in desperate need of this step up in trip.

It might be that he improves for this added distance – and he did win a novice contest over 1m 1½f in 2024, but that was a slowly run race.

My pick

Instead, I’m siding with Kamaway, who also steps up in trip but seems likely to progress. Eve Johnson Houghton’s filly has won two of her previous three starts in minor handicaps over 1m.

She moves up from Class 5 but is a half-sister to Ezaj, who has won over 1m 3f despite being by a sprinter. Kamaway gets more stamina from her sire, Kamako, and should improve.

Selection: 3.30pm Sandown – Kamaway ⭐⭐

4.07 Sandown – Class 3 Handicap (1m 6f)

There are only three runners for this £25,000 staying event but they all hold claims and I reckon My Ballyquinn (nap) is the answer.

David O’Meara’s runner has won two of his three starts since switching to handicaps, most recently when upped to 1m 6f in a Class 4 contest at York.

He looks likely to keep progressing and champion jockey Oisin Murphy now takes over in the saddle.

Selection: 4.07pm Sandown – My Ballyquin (nap) ⭐⭐⭐
