A new season of The Kardashians is coming. Hulu released the first trailer for Season 8 of the famous family’s reality show on September 17, and in addition to some drama between the siblings, it also featured a sneak peek inside Kim Kardashian‘s recent health scare.

“I have something called esophagitis,” she says, while getting her hair and makeup done. Someone then asks her, “Your father … isn’t that what he died of?” and Kim replies, “Yeah.”

The camera cuts to Kim in a hospital gown, while another shot later shows her being wheeled into an apparent surgery or procedure. “I can’t,” Kris Jenner says at one point. “It makes me want to cry.”

Per the Mayo Clinic, esophagitis is “swelling and irritation, called inflammation, of the tissues that line the esophagus.” The esophagus is the “muscular tube that carries food and drink from the mouth to the stomach.”

The issue can cause “painful, difficult swallowing” and also lead to chest pain. Without treatment, esophagitis can lead to “serious health issues” because the esophagus may have trouble moving food to the stomach.

Kim’s father, Robert Kardashian, died in 2003 from esophageal cancer. His death came just two months after his July 2003 diagnosis.

In 2019, Kim and other family members attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Robert G. Kardashian Center for Esophageal Health at UCLA Health. “So proud to announce the Robert G Kardashian center for esophageal health being launched at UCLA,” Kim tweeted at the time. “My wish is that other families can have more information and we can also focus on health and prevention.”

This is not the first time Kim has given updates about her health on The Kardashians. During Season 7 in 2025, she revealed that an MRI discovered a “small aneurysm” in her brain, which doctors theorize was likely caused by stress. She then had a scan done that revealed the front part of her brain is “less active than it should be.”

In the end, everything ended up being OK, and Kim revealed on Good Morning America, “Everything works out.”
