Over the last few years, Mindy Kaling‘s weight has made headlines, and now, she’s dishing about her journey.
“It’s sometimes no fun when one of your favorite actors loses weight… Of course, it’s never a joy to be scrutinized, but also I truly understand it, as someone who consumes pop culture,” she told Bustle, adding that her decision to lose weight wasn’t due to “vanity reasons.”

Kaling listed her will to stay fit and “live at least 20 more years” for her three children as one of the reasons she chose to lose weight. “Do I wake up every day being like, ‘I look amazing, and I’m so gorgeous’? No, unsurprisingly, but I truly feel so healthy,” she said.
The actress further elaborated on how her approach to losing weight has changed over the years. She noted, “When I was younger, I would want to lose weight because of vanity reasons. Now I want to lose weight or have lost weight because I want to stave off things like diabetes. I had it on both sides of my family.”

Back in 2022, Kaling told People that she once treated working out as something that necessarily needed to be strict and “punishing.” Now, she sees it differently.
Her fitness routine now includes a variety of activities, including walking, running, weight training, hiking, yoga, pilates, strength training and tai chi. She previously told Self, “I refuse to let [my workout routine] get monotonous.”

Four years ago, she sat down for an interview with E! News and revealed that she keeps her fitness routine fun and effective at the same time. “I try to find these little pockets of time where I can move my body… I find ways to make sure I enjoy working out, too.”
“I will go on a two-mile walk after dropping my kid off at school and call a friend from high school to catch up on the phone. It doesn’t feel like I’m working out, but I am, and I enjoy that I get to socialize too,” she added.
Kaling also stopped depriving herself of food and switched to eating in moderation. Speaking to Today in 2022, she said, “If there was an awards show or I was shooting something, I used to… stop eating these foods, or six weeks beforehand, I’m only going to juice… I just am really, for the first time in my life, trying moderation, and I love it.”
