Prince William and Prince Harry could find themselves united by the very thing that has once again put their family history under the microscope.

Earl Spencer's bombshell claim that King Charles allegedly told him "we'll forget her soon enough" after the devastating news of Diana's death is nothing less than extraordinary.

The once-close brothers may face not only the difficult question of whether their uncle should have revealed such a private conversation nearly three decades later, but also what to make of the alleged words themselves.

If the Earl's account is accurate, it is difficult to imagine that either son would be unaffected by hearing that their father spoke of their beloved mother in those terms so soon after her passing.

Yet that does not mean that they would welcome their uncle putting the alleged claim into the public domain.

William and Harry could conceivably feel protective of their father whilst also being protective of their late mother's memory - those two instincts could collide.

Whatever their individual relationships with Charles and Spencer are today, neither brother can change the fact that they were Diana's sons.

They were children at the time of her death, with the devastating aftermath of her death known to have been a defining experience in their lives.

The latest claim is nothing short of complicated. It is not just an allegation about their father which he strenuously denies through a Buckingham Palace statement; it is an account of an alleged conversation that took place during a painful part of their childhood.

Whilst William and Harry have taken very different paths, there are surely some wounds that don't need to be shared publicly to be understood by the two of them.

They may currently find themselves in an unusual position of having two very different reactions to the same revelation: anger that a private conversation has been exposed, and sadness - or anger - at the words that were allegedly spoken.

William and Harry lost the same mother on the same nightmarish summer night. They have also faced the same extraordinary public grief. Their disagreements over almost everything do not erase the history that they share.
