James Corden calling football âsoccerâ didnât sit well with Prince Harry. The Duke of Sussex took the host to task during his recent appearance on the After Hours talk show. His comment struck a chord with fans who appreciated him standing up for the universal term, one that originated in 19th-century Britain.
Prince Harry calls out James Corden over his âsoccerâ remark
Prince Harry appeared on After Hours with James Corden following the World Cup final on July 19, where Spain edged out Argentina in a thrilling match.
However, the conversation later turned to the Duke of Sussexâs athletic background, with Corden asking whether Harry played soccer as a kid. âI always thought that you went to a school that was too posh for soccer,â joked the host.
Although Harry now calls California home, it looks like he is not letting go of his British vocabulary. The 41-year-old Duke answered with a correction, âToo posh to play football,â he said. âWhy are you calling it soccer?â Harry added.
âBecause weâre in the United States, baby!â Corden shot back.

The moment spread online after hitting on a well-worn U.K.vs.U.S. discussion. âTell him harry, itâs called football!!!!â hyped a fan. âItâs football here and everywhere,â backed another. âWhyâs an Englishman calling it f***ing soccer â sellout,â bashed a follower. âPrince Harry, I love ya, but itâs soccer here,â wrote an American fan.
As for his response to the question, the Duke confirmed that he played, though football wasnât his forte. âYou know what, in prep school, I was in the first team. And then I went to the bigger school, and I ended up in the E team,â he shared. âA team, down to the E team. So that didnât feel very good,â Harry added.
That said, Prince Harry is clearly still following the sport. According to PEOPLE, he joined the British comedian and England legend Rio Ferdinand to talk about their countryâs tough loss to Argentina in the World Cup semifinal. England led 1-0, but Argentina scored twice in the final five minutes, costing them a chance at their first World Cup final since 1966.
