Prince Harry was merely a child when his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, perished in a devastating car crash 29 years ago. In the years since, the prince has been candid about the profound effect her loss has had on him.

He was just 12 years old when he received the devastating news of the crash while vacationing with fellow members of the royal family at Balmoral.

The prince has addressed the significant toll his mother's death took on his mental well-being. While both he and Prince William have shared numerous personal anecdotes about Diana over the years, they have also expressed regret over how their final moments with her unfolded.

Prince Harry disclosed in a 2017 documentary that he is deeply haunted by his last conversation with his mother, admitting he was eager to cut the call short so he could go outside to play.

In the documentary "Diana, Our Mother", Prince William and Prince Harry sat together to reminisce about their mother and reflected on the last time they saw her.

Harry said: "I can't really, necessarily, remember what I said. But all I do remember is probably, you know, regretting for the rest of my life how short the phone call was.

"And if I'd known that was the last time I was going to speak to my mother - the things I would have said to her."

Prince William added: "I remember just feeling completely numb, disoriented, dizzy. You feel very, very confused. And you keep asking yourself, 'Why me?' All the time, 'Why? What have I done? Why? Why has this happened to us?'"

Also featured in the documentary, Prince Harry reflected on Diana's funeral, which took place 29 years ago today in London on September 6.

He recalled: "My mother had just died and I had to walk a long way behind her coffin, surrounded by thousands watching me while millions more did on television.

"I don't think any child should be asked to do that, under any circumstances. I don't think it would happen today."

William added: "There's nothing like it in the world. There really isn't. It's like an earthquake has just run through the house and through your life and everything. Your mind is completely split. And it took me a while for it to actually sink in."
