An explosive account from a royal writer reveals that Princess Diana ruined King Charles’s artwork and art tools during a huge fight on their honeymoon.
This moment shows the deep marriage problems that were already starting between them. Diana was 20, and Charles was 32 when they got married at St Paul’s Cathedral in July 1981. Right after their big wedding, the two went on a 12-day boat trip across the Mediterranean on the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Princess Diana sent a letter later calling the trip a “tremendous success,” but royal author Penny Junor says the mood behind closed doors was very bad, as reported by RadarOnline.
A royal insider talked about how the couple wanted totally different things, “The tragedy of that honeymoon was that Charles and Diana arrived with completely different ideas about what those weeks together should look like. Diana wanted his attention and imagined they would finally have uninterrupted time to behave like newlyweds away from the enormous spectacle surrounding their wedding.”
The source said that Charles liked to paint and read by himself. But Diana felt like his habits meant he was pushing her away.
“What might have seemed perfectly harmless to him could feel to her like evidence that even on their honeymoon she was competing for his attention. That frustration accumulated until it erupted in utter rage. Destroying the painting and his materials was an extraordinary reaction, but it illustrated just how rapidly disappointment could become anger between them.”
Junor wrote in her book The Duchess that Charles brought along his art gear and books. “He’d taken along his watercolours, some canvases and a pile of books by the Afrikaner mystic and writer Laurens van der Post, which he’d hoped he and Diana might share and then discuss in the evenings,” Junor said.

However, Diana did not like to read and grew very mad. Junor wrote, “She hated his wretched books and was offended that he might prefer to bury his head in one of them rather than sit and talk to her”.
The fight reached a breaking point while Charles was painting on the ship. “One day, when Charles was painting on the veranda deck of Britannia, he went off to look at something for half an hour. He came back to find she’d destroyed his painting and all his materials,” Junor wrote.
Diana Discovered Entwined ‘C’ Cufflinks Gifted by Camilla
Camilla Parker Bowles was another major cause of fights during the trip. Diana later talked about finding a pair of cufflinks on King Charles that had two C letters on them, per Marie Claire.
“On our honeymoon, cufflinks arrive on his wrists – two Cs entwined like the Chanel ‘C.’ Got it. One knew exactly. So I said, ‘Camilla gave you those, didn’t she?’ He said, ‘Yes, so what’s wrong? They’re a present from a friend.’ And boy, did we have a row. Jealousy, total jealousy. And it was such a good idea – the two Cs – but it wasn’t that clever,” Diana said.
Charles and Diana officially split up in 1992 and got divorced in 1996. Diana died at age 36 in a fast car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997.
