Princess Diana’s famous Revenge Dress is returning to the auction block. The iconic black dress will headline Sotheby’s December fashion auction. However, collectors will face a major price tag for the historic piece. Part of the proceeds will also support a charity.

Sotheby’s will offer Diana’s famous dress in New York this December. As per Vogue, the auction will take place on December 9. The dress will headline a standalone fashion evening auction. Sotheby’s estimates its value between $150,000 and $300,000.
Christina Staboalin designed the black silk dress for Diana. She wore it to a Vanity Fair party in London in June 1994. The event took place at the Serpentine Gallery. Diana’s appearance quickly became one of her most memorable fashion moments.
The dress featured an off-the-shoulder neckline and a fitted silhouette. Diana paired it with a pearl choker and scarlet makeup. Her confident appearance attracted enormous attention that evening. The look later became known as the “Revenge Dress.”
Diana never publicly wore the dress again. In 1997, she included it among 79 dresses sold for charity. The auction raised money for cancer and AIDS organizations. Its current owners acquired the Stambolian design during that sale.

The upcoming auction will continue that charitable connection. Part of the proceeds will benefit NHS Lothian Charity. The money will support the Royal Hospital of Edinburgh. The sale therefore carries both cultural and charitable significance.
The original dress has remained privately owned for nearly three decades. Its mythology has grown during that time. Christina Stambolian later created a replica using the same materials. That version also eventually appeared at auction.
The Crown recreated Diana’s look for Elizabeth Debicki. The Netflix costume later sold during a 2024 auction. Even Diana’s former green Jaguar recently attracted collectors. The car sold for £66,250 in June.
Before the December sale, the dress will travel internationally. Sotheby’s plans exhibitions in London, Hong Kong, and Geneva. It will then go on public display before the auction. Nearly 32 years after Diana first wore it, the dress returns to the spotlight.
