Rider Strong reveals which controversial“ Girl Meets World ”storyline was written just to ‘piss’ Disney off

Rider Strong revealed that one episode of Girl Meets World was partly inspired by Breaking Bad.

Predictably, the overt references to Walter White’s illicit activities were cut from the show.

Beyond the reference to drugs, Disney had strict standards in regards to food in scripts.

Rider Strong shared that a cheeky Breaking Badreference was nearly written into one Girl Meets World episode.

During season 1 of the Disney Channel series, the writers penned an episode revolving around blue cupcakes, which nod to the illicit substances that Walter White was cooking up in his meth lab.

“Remember in Breaking Bad where he makes a blue meth?” Strong asked cohost Danielle Fishel on the Thursday episode of Pod Meets World. “They did that where they made blue cupcakes with a blue dye and all the kids get addicted to it. And it was one of the funniest table reads. And I remember I turned to [showrunner] Michael [Jacobs] and he’s like, ‘Oh, we just did this to piss Disney off. They’re never gonna let us do it.’”

Predictably, the homage did not make the final cut, although a version of the storyline did make it onto the show. In season 1 episode 10, titled “Girl Meets Crazy Hat,” Riley (Rowan Blanchard) and Farkle (Corey Fogelmanis) make pure sugar muffins for an assignment about business, hooking their classmates onto the pastries.

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to Jacobs for comment.

Beyond rejecting the drug innuendo, Fishel explained that Disney had strict guidelines around storylines featuring food, emphasizing that the channel wanted to promote a balanced diet.

“One of the things that Disney cares a lot about in their scripts is not showing too many unhealthy activities or treats,” she said. “So they want food to be healthy. They want it to be balanced. They’re okay with a treat here and there, but they definitely don’t want an entire episode where somebody’s, you know, gorging themselves on sweets.”

There was even an episode where Disney pushed back on a line in the script that featured the young protagonists, who live in New York City, going out for pizza.

“Disney had said, ‘Do we have to, you know, does it have to be a slice of pizza?’ Maybe could they go get some fruit?’” Fishel recalled. “And Michael was like, ‘No.’”
