Shailene Woodley’s Stylist Addresses “Super Rude” Reactions to Actress’s Polarizing Emmys Look

Shailene Woodley wore Balenciaga couture at the 2026 Emmy Awards on September 14.

Woodley’s stylist Karla Welch addressed people’s “super rude” comments about the star’s look.

Welch also works with Sarah Paulson, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Hannah Einbinder.

Shailene Woodley’s stylist isn’t holding back after the actress’s Emmys look caused a stir on social media. Karla Welch dressed the Paradise star for the annual award show on September 14, leading some to critique Woodley’s unconventional ensemble.

Wearing a couture look designed by Balenciaga’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, Woodley paired a plunging periwinkle halter top with gold wide-leg pants covered in crystals and sequins. She topped it all off with burgundy elbow-length gloves and a pair of slingbacks, as well as a colorful statement necklace by Howl Jewelry, which was crafted from Venetian glass.

Addressing online critics via Threads, Welch came to her client’s defense. “Love or hate something fine but it’s an opinion and it can even be a conversation but being super rude and mean and taking glee from it, well that says a lot more about the mouths it’s coming from,” she wrote.

Aside from Woodley, Welch is also known for dressing Sarah Paulson, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Hannah Einbinder.

The last time that Woodley attended the Emmys was back in 2017, when she was up for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for Big Little Lies. She opted for a striking backless gown in a shade of emerald green. Woodley styled the velvet number with gold jewelry.

Before Monday’s ceremony, Woodley accepted her first-ever Emmy for Hulu’s Paradise in a Brandon Maxwell minidress. The white scoop-neck frock included decorative seams and a flared skirt. Woodley accessorized with a diamond and emerald necklace—also from Howl—to complete her ensemble.

“Mom, this is so cool,” Woodley said onstage, per Deadline. “I just feel so lucky to do what we do and to be a part of the circus with all of you amazing traveling storytelling clowns.”

Speaking to People about her role in the post-apocalyptic series, she said: “Annie and I are actually very different, which was fun to play somebody that was very different than who I am.”
