In a forthcoming book on Queen Elizabeth’s relationship with American presidents during her reign, President Trump spoke with the author, Susan Page, about his experience visiting the UK and his impression of the late monarch.
Trump recalled one conversation with Queen Elizabeth, when he asked her who her favorite president was. Queen Elizabeth allegedly replied, “Why? They were all so good.” After asking about Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon, Trump then asked, “So what do you mean, you liked them all?” to which the Queen replied, per Trump’s retelling, “I liked them all. I can’t say anything bad about any of them. They were great.”

He then tried to ask her about her favorite British prime ministers, and similarly made no headway in getting her to reveal anything. Trump was impressed, he told Page. “I said to myself, ‘How genius is this?’” he told the author. “I couldn’t get her to say a bad thing about anybody. She was amazing, actually. And not for any reason other than I don’t think she wanted to create controversy. It was unnecessary.”

Page wrote that the Queen “prompted a rare moment of self-reflection” for Trump. “I hate to say this because it’s very disparaging to myself. She was sort of the opposite of me. She didn’t mix it up,” Trump said. “She was there for so many decades, and she literally never made a mistake, if you think about it. I mean, everyone was making mistakes around her, but she never made a mistake.”
Page’s book, The Queen and Her Presidents: The Hidden Hand That Shaped History, will publish in April and is available for preorder now:

Trump’s remarks weren’t his first time speaking about Queen Elizabeth, or the royal family. (In fact, the president has a long, complicated history with the royals.) Upon Queen Elizabeth’s death in 2022, Trump wrote in a statement, in part, “Melania and I will always cherish our time together with the Queen, and never forget Her Majesty's generous friendship, great wisdom, and wonderful sense of humor. What a grand and beautiful lady she was—there was nobody like her!”
