Joe Mixon missed the entire 2025 NFL season due to an injury we still don't know much about. Apparently, it's severe enough to end his career.
Houston Texans beat writer Aaron Wilson reported that while Mixon has not officially filed his retirement papers, he's told former Cincinnati Bengals teammates "his career is over." A source close to Mixon told Wilson there's "some hope," but Wilson still thinks "it's probably over." Wilson also reported Mixon underwent another surgery this offseason to help with mobility.
Mixon, 29, dealt with a mysterious foot injury last preseason and never wound up playing for Houston in 2025. Woody Marks and Nick Chubb carried the load instead, and after the season the Texans released Mixon with a non-football injury designation.

An eight-year NFL veteran, Mixon played his first seven seasons in Cincinnati before a Pro Bowl campaign with Houston in 2024. If it's indeed the end of his career, Mixon will finish with 7,428 rushing yards and 60 rushing touchdowns.
What happened to Joe Mixon?
It's still unclear, but Wilson vehemently denied the rumor of Mixon shooting himself in the foot. He called it a "ridiculous urban legend."
