Whoopi Goldberg has announced sheâll go on hiatus from The View this year.
The EGOT winner explained why she wonât be at the Hot Topics table as she takes an extended break.
Joy Behar previously went on hiatus from the show for a two-week trip to London to promote her play.
Whoopi Goldberg is going on hiatus from The View.
The EGOT-winning actress explained Wednesday why she wonât be at the Hot Topics table for an extended break from the daytime talk show, which returned for season 30 last week.
The View producer Brian Teta spoke with Goldberg about the pre-planned absence on the latest edition of the talk showâs Behind the Table podcast (below). âWeâre going to lose you for a couple of days,â he said, as the star takes a break to film her upcoming Barack Obama-produced Netflix movie Women Like Us with Vivica A. Fox, Vanessa Williams, and her Sister Act costar Jenifer Lewis.
âYouâre going to be gone over the next two weeks, but youâll be here on Mondays,â Teta said, as the production will film in the area, meaning Goldberg wonât have to go too far to get to set each day.

Teta then announced that former View cohosts Lisa Ling, Star Jones, Sherri Shepherd, and Debbie Matenopoulos will fill in for Goldberg on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for the next two weeks, while current longtime cohost Joy Behar will serve as moderator in Goldbergâs absence. (Entertainment Weekly has reached out to The Viewâs representative for more information on the exact dates of Goldbergâs planned absence.)
Goldberg elaborated more on the plot of the movie (also produced by Michelle Obama) thatâs taking her away from her seat on The View.
âItâs five really wonderful women â several of whom Iâve worked with before,â the 70-year-old told Teta. âItâs about change and getting older and having fun with your friends and people who get you. Itâs about finding your people. Iâm excited to do it. Itâll be fun.â
Goldberg also recounted preparing to shoot the project involved acquainting herself with being able to do yoga while standing on a paddleboard for a key scene.

âIâm determined to do it because there are those who didnât think I would. I do most of the things that I do because I know people are not waiting for me to fail, but theyâre waiting for me to bail,â the Ghost actress said.
When Teta asked how she coped with the demanding preparation, Goldberg admitted, âItâs not really my favorite thing. I like the water, but I donât love the water. I like being by the water, I donât like being in the water. It takes a long time for me to dry.â
Goldberg has taken several breaks from The View in the past, mostly to film projects sheâs passionate about, including the Italian soap opera Un Posto Al Sole and the long-delayed Anansi Boys TV seriesadaptation.
The Hollywood icon has long maintained that she likes that The View allows her the freedom to explore acting projects, but said in August on Keke Palmerâs podcast that she might leave the show if she had more money.

âI constantly say to people, âYes, Iâm still open for this.â And especially now, because people say, âWell, youâre on The View, you canât do anything.â If I need to go, I go,â she told Palmer.
Speaking of the misconception that actors have tons of expendable money, Goldberg continued: âBecause if I had that kind of money â and I love my job â I donât know that Iâd still be doing it,â she said. âI donât know that Iâd still be doing the show. But, a girlâs gotta eat, and I never married well, so, I still have to support myself!â
The View airs weekdays on ABC. Listen to Goldberg discuss her upcoming absence in the podcast episode above.
